Resume review checklist: 25 things to check before applying

Proofreading catches typos. A real resume review also checks whether the document makes the right argument, supports its claims, survives parsing, and opens correctly after export.

Quick answer

Start with these four rules

  • Review relevance, factual accuracy, writing, structure, and export quality separately.
  • Check names, dates, links, and numbers against a trusted source.
  • Read every bullet for action, context, and evidence rather than grammar alone.
  • Open the final attachment from the exact file you plan to send.

1. Check whether the content answers the target job

Start with the vacancy beside the resume. The top half of page one should make the target understandable and surface the strongest relevant proof. Remove details that consume attention without improving the hiring decision.

Review each recent role for distinct evidence. If every bullet begins with managed, responsible for, or helped, the reader learns very little about what changed because of you.

  • Target title or professional direction is clear within seconds.
  • Most important requirements are supported by examples, not copied phrases.
  • Recent roles receive more space than old or unrelated work.
  • Summary, skills, and experience tell the same career story.
  • No claim depends on confidential, exaggerated, or invented information.

2. Check facts and writing with different passes

Compare dates, titles, qualifications, employer names, locations, URLs, numbers, and tool names with records or profiles you trust. Then run a separate language pass for tense, repeated openings, vague adjectives, unexplained acronyms, and unnecessarily long sentences.

Read the document aloud or from bottom to top to break familiarity. Open the AI Resume Coach beside the live resume and choose Review Resume for a structured pass across evidence, clarity, relevance, readability, completeness, and ATS compatibility. Continue with follow-up questions, but verify every recommendation against your real history.

  • Current role uses present tense; completed work uses past tense.
  • Numbers include enough context to understand what they measure.
  • Acronyms are expanded when the target reader may not know them.
  • Email, phone, portfolio, and LinkedIn links open correctly.
  • Spelling follows one consistent language variant.

3. Inspect the file after export, not only inside the editor

Open the PDF at normal size on desktop and phone. Check page breaks, wraps, blank space, clipped characters, icon rendering, and whether headings remain attached to the content they introduce. Copy its text into a plain editor to expose severe reading-order problems.

Name the file clearly, attach the correct version, and reopen the attachment from the draft message before sending. Many resume mistakes happen after writing is finished: wrong file, outdated filename, broken link, or a last-minute export nobody checked.

1

Target pass

Confirm the document fits this vacancy and prioritizes the right evidence.

2

Fact pass

Verify every date, name, credential, link, and number.

3

Language pass

Use the coach to surface vague or repetitive wording, then verify any supported edit before keeping it.

4

File pass

Inspect the final PDF and the actual attachment before applying.

4. Check this issue with the ResumeMaker.Online AI Resume Coach

Open the robot launcher beside the active resume and choose Review Resume. The structured review covers evidence, clarity, relevance, readability, completeness, and ATS compatibility, then separates strengths, warnings, fixes, and opportunities.

Continue in the same chat by typing or speaking a follow-up. Ask for a contained edit when the correction is clear, inspect the red-and-green change preview, and use Undo if needed. Open Summary, Skills, the correct role-specific Bullet Assistant, Tailor To Job, Translate, Templates, Design, or Layout when a specialist workflow gives you better control. For job-specific feedback, bring in a real vacancy from the Browser Extension and keep the finished application in the Job Applications Tracker.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check first on my resume?

Check whether it clearly fits the target role. A perfectly proofread resume can still fail if its strongest evidence is irrelevant or buried.

How many times should I proofread a resume?

Use separate passes for relevance, facts, language, layout, and the final attachment. Several focused reviews are more reliable than repeatedly reading the whole document in the same way.

Should someone else review my resume?

Yes when possible. The AI Resume Coach can provide an immediate structured second pass, while another person can explain what role and evidence they remember after a quick scan. Both test communication, not just spelling.
